Store valued data SIM in Japan - b-mobile settings for NOKIA handsets

B-mobile_sim

I've picked up b-mobile 1GB/30days data SIM in Japan and struggled with its
setup on my E7, 5800XM, and N900. b-mobile store valuded SIM costs JPY 3480.
It's handy for short stay visitors who needs mobile internet access in Japan.

1) Call up 186-0120-915-886 and enter your SIM# 090-xxxx-xxxx.
per English guidance. Your SIM card will be activated in 5 miniutes.

2) *Manually* set up APN - you won't receive automatic config. SMS.

   APN      : dm.jplat.net
   User     : bmobile@fr
   Password : bmobile

3) NOKIA *Symbian* handset specific settings

Settings > Connectivity > Admin. settings > Packet Data >
Packet data connection - "when available"

4) Reboot your handset

Without "when available" setting, you will face SIM registration failure.

I've struggled for 3 days till figure this out, thanks to the tips at
NOKIA geeks party in Tokyo.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for Maemo N900, you need to :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) download fAPN from Application Manager

(2) put below command on the terminal

dbus-send --system --type=method_call --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.phone.net "/com/nokia/csd/gprs" org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.Set string:com.nokia.csd.GPRS string:AttachMode variant:string:WhenAvailable

(3) reboot

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For USB modem, just set up APN manually in the modem dialer app on your computer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

b-mobile SIM cards can be found large electronics shops in Tokyo.

* If you have a local address in Japan, you can order 1GB SIM at b-mobile online store
at lower price of JPY 2,980.

I've bought a spare one for my next visit so that I can activate it at the airport right after landing :)

My Top 10 Qt Apps on NOKIA E7 and N900

1) cuteBox (DropBox) by @generasoftware
  2) NOKIA Battery Monitor
  3) TwimGo (Twitter) - by  @tlaukkanen
  4) Qwassr (Twitter) private alpha by @kimitake
  5) YouTube Downloader by Pico Brothers (searech, view, HQ playback, download)

  6) gNewsReader (Google Reader) - by

this year when my E7 gets Belle firmware update.

3) TwimGo, 4) Qwassr, 7) NewsFlow, 8) fMobi, 9) Kasvopus are also available
for my beloved Maemo 5 N900. 10) is reserved for the great CuteTube-QML
(YouTube) app which is supposed to be ported from Maemo/MeeGo to S^3.

Coming hot Harmattan-Meego N9 users will also enjoy quite a few popular
Qt/QML apps being developed right now.

Fun time for MeeGo, Maemo, Symbian uers :)

Water Dipped iPod Touch Having Flickering Display Problem

Ipodtouch1

This is a personal note to one of my friends who has ficker problems
with his water dipped iPod touch. I suspect leakage in the fine-pitch
connector area causing the flickering problems. Here is what I suggest
to try - cleaning:

1) Study the connector area using Microscope if possible. Never ever
touch the contact area with your fingers.

2) Dip the connector area only in lukewarm distilled water (never use
mineral water) for 30 -60 seconds.

3) Dip in 80-90% degree alcohole for 1 second and immediately blow
using hair-drier for a second.

I'm curious to know any better pointer here.

BL-5J Battery Run-down Test (2) on Nokia N900

Here's the BL-5J battery test report - Day 2.
This will be my typical medium use in Hong Kong for 2.5
hours online: 2 hours in commuting + half hour during tea/lunch break.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.5G HSPA (Vodafone HongKong)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Battery installed at 12:00 (94% battery reading)

1Hr 94%→64% 12:15-13:15 Gmail, Twitter (Qwassr:2 min auto update), IM, Instapaper, and TuneWiki SHOUTcast radio streaming - all multitasking

0.5Hr 50%→38% 15:10-15:40 Gmail, Twitter (Dabr), IM.

1Hr 34%→10% 15:50-16:50 Gmail, Twitter (Dabr), IM, and MP3 play (40 min.)

Shut down at 19:35

* 14 phone calls - 40 min.
* 1 GPS Google Map navigation (GeePS) - 5 min.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.5 hours in total
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The same result as yesterday.
At 17:30, the battery reading dropped to 0.4% and the battery survived 2 hours afterward, handling 5 short phone calls. I guess the advanced power manager's battery reading leaves some safety margin.

I'll do another test in China over the weekend and see how long BL-5J can survive over 2.5G GPRS only.

BL-5J Battery Run-down Test (1) on Nokia N900

Just a recap of the 1st day test using a fresh BL-5J battery installed in the N900 on the road today over the 2.5G/3.5G mixed signal.

- Screen Brightness : 40%
- Over-clocked kernel at 805MHz

I've driven my N900 *hard* about 4 and half hours - if not as hard as watching steaming video.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     2.5G(GPRS) always connected (China)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 Hrs (-15%) 13:30-15:30 Phone calls, SMS, casual Gmail & Twitter use

2.5 Hrs (-40%) 15:30-18:00 *Heavy* Gmailing & tweeting, and casual SMS/IM including 1 hour MP3 playing, 30 min. phone calls.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     3.5G(HSPA) always connected (HongKong)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 Hrs (-44%) 18:00-20:00 Heavy Gmailing, tweeting, and SMSing including 1H long MP3 play, 30 min. phones call & Twitter timeline auto-updated at every 2 minute using Qwassr for 40 min.

0.5 Hr (1%) 19:30-20:00 Ordinary use

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     7 hours in total
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new battery has survived my 4 and half hours long heavy online usage - the display is almost always on. The battery mileage depends on your usage of course.

Let's see my *medium* usage test over the 3.5G signal (HSPA) tomorrow in Hong Kong.

HK Professional Technique in the LCD Protector Attachment 香港式液晶保護フィルム貼付けテクニック

(download)

Just passed by a mobile shop and got a LCD protector film on my Nokia 5800XM. A lady in the shop has done the job so professional at no extra cost. This is one of the great Hong Kong style service. The cost? US$2.58 !!

The attached video is taken by my 6 years old Nokia 7710 so please
bear the quality. It still can show you how professional they're. The
technique here is to place the film onto the display at the natural
force nice and gentle and rub it well with a cloth. If you find any
dust in there, redo it.

液晶保護フィルムはやっぱり香港の馴染みの店で買うのが一番。
うまい、早い、安いの三拍子。

動画は6年落のNokia 7710で思わず撮影したので画像は悪いけど、貼付けテクニックの参考にはなるはず。『貼るのではなく、のせる。そしてあとは付属の布でよく押し伸ばす』、これがポイント。見てる分にはとても簡単^^;
